What we do.

What to expect in the Explorer Unit.

Amazon Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of the Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The tone is more informal than the younger sections with Explorers and Leaders on first name terms and even sharing the same uniform.

We recognize that young people from 14–18 lead busy lives and have lots of pressures on their time, particularly from exams, so allowances are made for Explorer meetings and attendance to be flexible.

The Explorer Unit tries to be outdoors and adventurous as much as possible and there is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions through the District and County. There are currently three other Explorer Units in the District (Itchen North) and there's healthy rivalry and competitions between the units.

The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections and to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
